Looking Behind The Scenes

How’s your planning coming along for 2017?

Personally, I’ve compiled a list of all the places I’d love to visit this year, and my list has largely been informed by the pictures I’ve seen online from other people’s visits to those locations, things I’ve read or heard from various sources.

Can you relate to this?

Have you seen pictures from beautiful locations on your social media feed from a connection’s travels? Discoveries? From conversations with others? Or on tv? And thought, “how beautiful! I’d love to go there”?

But have you ever wondered about the story behind the beauty?

How was that beautiful monument/place built? Why was it built? Why was it preserved? How much have things changed in the way the locals relate with one another or foreigners?

Often enough, if we look into these questions, the answers we unearth would shock us. Just like when you watch the behind the scenes of a movie or show you’ve seen – only to discover things are not always as they seem.

This should however not deter us from visiting interesting places, as learning more about these things/places would only add more colour/character to our experience of it.

Wondering where to start from when planning for your next trip/exploration?

  1. Do research on the places and areas of interest from history/travel books, online and other sources – either before travelling or during
  2. If possible, try exploring the destination(s) with locals as this would give you a firsthand sense of the culture and history of the place.

So, whilst we discover the beauty the world has to offer, let us be intentional about also ‘looking behind the scenes’ to see how things came to be.

Be inspired.
